You’re the BOSS, now what?!
Picture this! You’ve just been handed the keys to a brand new… manager’s role. That’s right, what was once the place you produced within is now the place you will lead and in order to be an effective leader, I want you to keep these three things in mind.
1. Be Curious. You may be leading the same people you worked beside and the best way to gain their trust as their new leader is to talk to them, ask them questions about improvements that can be made, now that you are in your new role, ask about what projects they want to be a part of—you can maintain comradery but shift the conversation toward process improvement.
2. Be Communicative. You can be honest and sincere about the sudden shift in dynamic. Talk about what your vision is for your team and how you see everyone working toward that vision.
3. Be Professional. You get to decide which conversations you take part in. If a conversation doesn’t serve your department or your team, you can choose to not participate. If you take issue with an employee, talk to them, not to others about it. Lead by example to encourage a gossip-free culture among your staff.
You’re going to do great! I’m Linds Brown and I’m cheering for you every step of the way!
